Useful swaps

  • Use a whole-wheat wrap: Replace the 64 g pita with one 64 g whole-wheat tortilla. Mash 1/2 cup (76 g) chickpeas with 1 tbsp (15 g) tahini, 1 tsp (4.5 g) olive oil, 1 tbsp (15 g) lemon juice, 1 tbsp (3 g) chives, 1/2 tsp (0.5 g) dill, and 1/4 tsp (0.6 g) pepper. Fold in the remaining 1/2 cup (76 g) chickpeas, 1/2 cup (52 g) cucumber, and 1/3 cup (50 g) red pepper; roll all of the filling in the tortilla and keep chilled. Remains vegan. Still contains sesame from tahini and wheat from the tortilla. Calories and protein should remain similar; fiber and sodium vary by tortilla brand.
  • Make it sesame-free: Replace the 1 tbsp (15 g) tahini with 1 tbsp (16 g) unsweetened sunflower seed butter. Mash 1/2 cup (76 g) chickpeas with the seed butter, 1 tsp olive oil, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tbsp chives, 1/2 tsp dill, and 1/4 tsp pepper. Fold in the remaining 1/2 cup (76 g) chickpeas, 1/2 cup (52 g) cucumber, and 1/3 cup (50 g) red pepper; fill the 64 g pita and keep chilled. Remains vegan. Removes sesame when made with a sunflower seed butter verified free from sesame cross-contact; wheat remains. Calories and protein remain close, with a slightly nuttier seed flavor and brand-dependent sodium.
